Medical Care for Eddie

Organized by Boston Brigade

The Handsome Eddie
From Eddie's Mom:
As of today, Eddie is cone-less... WOO-HOO!!! The vet eye doctor says he DOES have peripheral vision, so he is able to navigate himself around w/out bonking into things. The vet's office said he is ok to go coneless unless he starts rubbing at his eye, and then to put the cone on for a while. He hasn't run into a single thing since we took the cone off. So happy that he will retain some sense of vision. And today he learned to use the doggie-door! We practiced over and over and over luring him in and out with pieces of chicken, and w/in an hour, he was doing it himself, coming and going as he pleased. I'm such a proud puppymama..

And here's Eddie

Update from Eddie's mommie
The "three of us napping" pic was taken 5/6.

The "Mommy took the squeaker out, so now I can chew my bunny's butt" pic was taken this afternoon (5/7).

Eddie seems to have lots of energy today, and we go for a walk every day, and he is learning to go up and down the stairs (while I hold his harness for safety) with no problems. He was very happy when I took the squeakers out of his toys, and he played with them and the tennis balls for quite a while this afternoon. And now? Sleeping like a baby in his made-special-just-for-him bed/ring.

He jumped up on our couches today, which is fine with me, but I'll need to work with him on what is a "toy," and what isn't (decorative pillows). Haha! He is so happy playing and sleeping and learning his new environment, and will do just about anything for a playful little scritch-scratch on his

New Pictures of Eddie in his new forever home
Eddie is in his new Forever Home Yay!
Eddie went to his new Forever home yesterday after his eye checkup. Here's the update from his new Mommie Michelle:

"The eye dr appt went well, and his right eye is healing faster than anticipated - good news! We are hopeful that maybe at his appointment next week that he will be doing well enough for the doctors to consider him going "cone-less." Let's hope for the best.

As for his first day here, it went well. Eddie bumped around the family room and kitchen mapping the layout, and tuckered himself out. He took several gigantic naps, and each time laid right down and was snoozing contentedly within moments. He spent most of the day outside of his crate, and he took two naps on the kitchen floor, two on the family room rug, and one in his new fluffy ring that was specially made just for him.

The doctors think that by early summer he may have whatever vision he is going to get back, but we won't know how much. until then."

What great news! Thank you Michelle for the update and pictures. So many people just love Eddie

Note from Susan Mayne, Eddie's Foster mom
I just want to give a huge thank you to the hundreds of people who have stopped their hectic, busy life for a few moments each day, reached down into their soul to comprehend what is happening out there to so many of our animals, and open your heart to just one of these dogs. Dogs are so simple and pure. They usually give love and trust and faith no matter what has occurred in their past, trusting that we, the higher thinking animal as humans, will show compassion and care as so many of you have. We all have a moral and ethical duty to stop our busy lives for just one second each day to help those in need whether it be an elderly senior neighbor, a child who just needs a moment to have someone tell them "great job, I am so proud of you," or an animal sitting alone and unloved day after day. Hundreds of you did just that for Eddie and it restores my faith in man-kind each time it happens. In rescue we see both the worst, and the best in people, and what has transpired with Eddie once again restores my faith in people.
Eddie has blossomed into a fun, happy, playful boy and he adores his new family. Next week will be an adjustment in his new home, and I am sure Eddie will look upon it as a new adventure. Michelle and her kids are so gentle, loving and committed, and I will miss Eddie so much, but I want him to start on his new life with Michelle and her kids. Eddie is resilient and adventurous, and I know his new life next week will be filled with love, fun and he will carry with him the love that the hundreds of you all sent along with him.
Thank you all so much for reaching down into your hearts in our busy, hectic lives, and saying you are going to take a few moments out of your day, some money that I am sure you all needed to pay bills in this stupid economy mess, and the courage to say you want to make a difference in a life. You are all heroes.

Eddie's first training session
Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. Eddie had his first training session Saturday, 5/1. Here is a report from Eddie's new mom Michelle

"The training went well today, and Eddie spent a lot of time with the cone off of his neck. We learned how to use cues (tapping the floor, scratching at the carpet, etc.) for him to learn to locate objects. It was great to see his ears perk up to start to notice the sounds around him that he needs to listen for.

Gillian also did a little bit of "walking about the neighborhood" training - we noticed how he would walk roaming side to side as we went up the street... it was him mapping out where he was walking.

We also did some initial practice with him on Susan's staircase. We have a staircase in our home, so we wanted to start him learning how to trust himself to figure out where the step down was. He is very good at stepping up, but down requires trust and a leap of faith in himself, so it will take some practice. He was very skittish about it at first, but with practice, he was going up and down Susan's half-flight of stairs by himself. I was so proud of him!!!

All these little bits of information will come naturally to him soon, and it was so neat to see, just in the hour we worked with Gillian, how he was already adapting to his special needs."

Just wonderful! Keep up the good work Eddie, we love you.
